Gauingen marble

Gauinger SteinbruchThe characteristic Gauingen travertine is excavated in Gauingen quarry. Due to its robust quality yet fine structure, it has been used as a construction material for outer facades (e.g. baroque church in Zwiefalten) and interior work  since the 18th century. The Gauingen travertine originated in the Tertiary Period at the bottom of a freshwater lake in which the dissolved limestone of the Jurassic layers of the Swabian Alb were deposited together with animal and plant remains.
