Explorer map of the UNESCO Geopark Swabian Alb now also available in English
Good news for all international guests and English-speaking explorers: the popular explorer map of the UNESCO Global Geopark Swabian Alb is now also available in English.
The map invites you to see the Swabian Alb with new eyes and immerse yourself in its unique geological history. The rocks of the Alb were formed 200 to 142 million years ago in a tropical Jurassic sea and are divided into Black, Brown, and White Jurassic. The light-colored limestones of the White Jurassic are the youngest – a principle that is directly reflected in the coloring of the map: the lighter the color, the younger the rock.
Covering around 6,200 square kilometers, the UNESCO Global Geopark encompasses almost the entire Swabian Alb. The colorful geological map shows at a glance the age of the rocks you are standing on. Blue represents the Jurassic period, when the Alb was a tropical sea, while red areas indicate volcanic events in the Tertiary period – such as at the Randecker Maar.
Discovering geology means more than just reading maps
Experience the silence of a stalactite cave, follow in the footsteps of Ice Age mammoth hunters, or learn what fossils tell us about life in the Jurassic Sea. The discovery map shows 70 selected destinations, numbered and marked with easy-to-understand symbols, including the information points and geopoints of the UNESCO Swabian Alb Geopark. The relevant information is clearly laid out on the back. Thanks to precise geocoordinates, even remote locations in the middle of nature can be found with pinpoint accuracy.
The map is supplemented by “Geo-Facts – Knowledge to go”: compact pieces of information that make the history of the Earth understandable right on site and broaden your view of the landscape of the Swabian Alb.
With over 2,800 caves, the Swabian Alb is the region with the most caves in Germany. Twelve show caves in the geopark offer fascinating insights into this hidden world – they are also part of the discovery map
