Discussion on the Significance of the UNESCO Global Geopark Schwäbische Alb

Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister of Economic Affairs, Crafts, and Tourism, welcomed Iris Bohnacker from the UNESCO Global Geopark Schwäbische Alb to her constituency office in Balingen to discuss the geopark’s work, current projects, and its significance for the region.

On August 21, 2026, Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister of Economic Affairs, Crafts, and Tourism for the State of Baden-Württemberg and, since early August, President of the Baden-Württemberg Tourism Association (TVBW), met with Iris Bohnacker from the UNESCO Global Geopark Schwäbische Alb at her constituency office in Balingen. The discussion focused on the geopark’s diverse responsibilities and current projects, as well as its role in education, the preservation of geological heritage, and tourism in the region.

Current Projects and a Wide Range of Tasks Presented

Iris Bohnacker provided the minister with insights into the current activities and goals of the UNESCO Global Geopark Schwäbische Alb. Among other things, the English-language discovery map and the “Moni” project were presented. Dr. Hoffmeister-Kraut also got a preview of the as-yet-unreleased version of the new geopark app.

Dr. Hoffmeister-Kraut was impressed by the geopark’s diverse work and its regional, national, and international networks. Its core tasks include educational work, the preservation and promotion of the Swabian Alb’s geological heritage, and the development of tourism offerings. The work of the geopark schools was also particularly highlighted during the discussion.

UNESCO Seal of Quality as an Important Boost for the Region

Another key focus of the discussion was the significance of the international UNESCO designation for the Swabian Alb. At the conclusion of the discussion, there was consensus that retaining the UNESCO designation is important for the unique landscape of the Swabian Alb and deserves support. At the same time, the designation adds value to tourism in the region.

The meeting provided an opportunity to present the work of the UNESCO Global Geopark Swabian Alb at the state level and to deepen the professional exchange regarding its role for the region, particularly in the areas of education, protection, and enhancement of the geological heritage, as well as tourism.
