Working Together in the Geopark Network: Visitors from Austria to the Swabian Alb

Three days of intensive dialogue, fascinating insights, and active partnership within the European Geoparks Network: A delegation from Styria explored the Swabian Alb and brought back new perspectives on education, tourism, and rural development.

As part of the Interreg project Danube GeoTour Plus, a delegation from the UNESCO Global Geopark Steirische Eisenwurzen and the Gesäuse National Park visited the UNESCO Geopark Schwäbische Alb from April 20 to 22. Together, we explored selected highlights of the region and engaged in in-depth discussions about educational initiatives, sustainable tourism, and life in rural areas.

A highlight of the trip was the guided tour and tasting at the Berg Brewery in Ehingen. There, not only did the region’s long brewing tradition come to life, but we also got a glimpse into the future: an information center for the UNESCO Swabian Alb Geopark will soon be established here—another place where geological features and regional identity are vividly conveyed.

In Blaubeuren, the legendary Blautopf and the Museum of Prehistory left a lasting impression. The tour concluded with a visit to the Bleiche organic farm near Dettingen, which is operated by the BruderhausDiakonie.

The Styrian Eisenwurzen Nature and Geopark and the Gesäuse National Park are neighboring regions that collaborate closely on nature conservation, tourism, and regional development.

Our exchange with our Austrian partners has once again demonstrated how valuable cooperation within the international geopark network is.
