New managing director for the UNESCO Geopark Swabian Alb
Since March 1, 2026, certified geologist Iris Bohnacker has been managing the office of the UNESCO Global Geopark Swabian Alb in Schelklingen. She succeeds the previous management and intends to continue the successful development of the geopark.
The chairman of the Geopark, Schelklingen's mayor Ulrich Ruckh, officially welcomed Bohnacker to her new position. The geologist has been closely associated with the Geopark for many years: she has been working at the office since 2017 and has been involved in numerous projects. She therefore knows the region, its geological features, and the Geopark's partner structures very well.
Shaped by the Swabian Alb
Iris Bohnacker comes from Blaubeuren and studied geology and paleontology in Freiburg. She is still fascinated by the extraordinary diversity of the Swabian Alb – from the karst landscape with its many caves and fossil finds to the Swabian volcano and the meteorite crater near Steinheim am Albuch.
In the future, she would like to further strengthen the geopark – among other things, through new offerings for families, more educational work, and greater visibility for the UNESCO Global Geopark Swabian Alb.
