Partner Geoparks

The Swabian Alb Geopark maintains a partnership with the following UNESCO Geoparks to realise common goals, exchange knowledge on an internaional level and engage in cross-border networking.

  • UNESCO Global Geopark Ries (Germany)
The Swabian Alb Geopark and the Ries Geopark share a border in the Ostalbkreis district. The landscape was shaped by the impact of meteorites around 15 million years ago. In the Swabian Alb Geopark, an asteroid left behind the world-famous Steinheim Basin. And around the same time, an impact created the Ries crater near Nördlingen. The "From Crater to Crater" cycle path connects the two craters and the two UNESCO Global Geoparks in southern Germany. There are no borders in geology! Click here for the flyer.
  • UNESCO Global Geopark Rokua (Finland)
A partnership has existed between the Swabian Alb Geopark and the Finnish Geopark Rokua since 2013. Both geoparks know each other from their European networking activities. Muhoksen Lukio Gymnasium and Schubart-Gymnasium Aalen - both Geopark schools - have been organising a student exchange since 2016.

  • UNESCO Global Geopark Aso Caldera (Japan)
A partnership on the topic of geohazards has been established with the Japanese Geopark Aso Caldera since 2023. For example, a joint webinar was organised to mark Disaster Risk Reduction Day on 13 October 2023, which focused on the awareness of geohazards.
