Spielburg Göppingen-Hohenstaufen

Spielburg (Reiner Enkelmann)The Spielburg is a slumped limestone rock formation on the south-western slope of the Zeugenberg mountain near Hohenstaufen bei Göppingen.  This slab of White Jurassic limestone which broke off from the Alb Escarpment which then extended to this area during a landslide around 2 million years ago, is now the centre of a nature reserve which also features several dolines. The layered limestone was still being extracted from several quarries right up to the middle of the 1950s.
