The mining of oil shale (slate) belongs to the Swabian Alb’s cultural history. The memorial trail “Unternehmen Wüste" calls this tradition to mind. Mining areas are renaturalized after their use. It is amazing to see how quickly nature reclaims its terrain again.
Sheep and goats now graze in the former mining fields. In this way, the semi-open pasture landscape becomes a home to rare animals and plants. In addition, parts of the former quarry have been made accessible to the public. The SchieferErlebnis Park combines history and leisure with a mining and water playground inviting visitors to get in touch with the rock slate.
