Nationale Geoparks

Das Gütesiegel "Nationaler GeoPark" wird von der Alfred-Wegener Stiftung und dem Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung vergeben. Es steht unter der Schirmherrschaft der UNESCO.

Derzeit gibt es 5 Nationale Geoparks in Deutschland die auch international anerkannt sind. Neben dem Geopark Schwäbische Alb sind dies:

Europäische Geoparks und UNESCO Global Geoparks

Derzeit sind 37 Geoparks aus 15 europäischen Ländern Mitglieder im European Geopark Network. Das UNESCO Global Geopark Network hat seit September 2006 64 Mitglieder.

Die ausgezeichneten Geoparks verpflichten sich zur Bewahrung des geologischen, naturräumlichen und kulturellen Erbes, zur Vermittlung von Wissen über Erde und Natur sowie zur nachhaltigen wirtschaftlichen und geotouristischen Entwicklung ihrer Regionen.
